John E. Rogers (1907-1982)

Historian focusing on African American life in Hartford, in Connecticut and beyond

Rogers was a prominent historian, lectured at virtually every college in Connecticut and started the first Black history class at the University of Hartford. He was a former member of the CT Freedom of Information Commission and served on the boards of many civic organizations in Hartford, including the Community Renewal Team, the Urban League and Hartford Neighborhood Centers.

As a youth Rogers attended Weaver High School, where he was the first black student to be elected captain of the football team. He retired in 1968 after 40 years with the U.S. Postal Service, as the first Black person to be hired at the post office in Hartford, and became associated with the Capitol Region Education Council as a lecturer on African American history and culture. He studied at the Institute of African Affairs at the University of Ghana, the University of Science and Technology in Ghana and received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from the University of Hartford in 1970.
