October 1920: The Women Who Led the Way: Occupations


Occupations tell us more than how women spent their days in 1920. They give an indication as to what goods and services were most in demand, how the economy functioned. As we have shown on the Names and Occupations page, the majority of women wrote "Housewife" when applying to be made a voter. Even that could be misleading, as we know of several women who did far more than stay home. Below is an array of occupations illustrating women's role in the 1920 economy.
