Services at HPL

An overview of some of our services.

Hartford Public Library’s Security Officer Training Program, commonly known as "Guard Card" classes, approved by the State of Connecticut.
The successful completion of this one-day program will qualify candidates to apply for a Security Officer ID card, issued by the State of Connecticut Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection. (C.G.S. Sec 29-161q)

Hartford Public Library will be offering this program once a month at our Downtown Library on the dates listed below. Classes will be limited to the first 10 persons who sign up.

Class Registration Fee: $100*
Registration form and payment is due the Wednesday before the class date. See form for details.

The registration form and a check or money order can be mailed in or brought into the Library (see details on registration form, below). If your first choice is full, we will call you to select a different date. Deadlines for payment are indicated below.

Cancellations made up to 3 days before the class will be refunded $75.00 (*$25.00 of the $100.00 fee is nonrefundable.) 
No refunds for individuals who do not cancel 3 days prior to scheduled class, or who attend class but leave early. 

Please note: all participants must wear masks when in the library and comply with COVID-19 policies and procedures. The library retains the right to cancel and/reschedule classes if required. Minimum class size 4.

Please be aware that participation in this class or obtaining a Security Officer ID card ("Guard Card") does not guarantee employment at Hartford Public Library or elsewhere. 

After the Class

After completing the course, applicants will be responsible for the following:

Filling out the application (DPS135C)

Copy of current driver’s license

1 passport style photo

Obtaining fingerprints

Complete naturalization paperwork (if applicable)

Checks or money orders for:

  • $100 application fee
  • $75 CT background check 
  • $13.25 FBI check

The class instructor will provide more details about what you need to do to apply for a Guard Card.
