Marietta Canty (1905-1986) 

Hollywood Actress, Nurse, Justice of the Peace, Social Services Leader

Canty became famous for playing domestics in Hollywood films, one of the few roles available to her at that time. She grew up in Hartford, attended the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing in New York City, and had a walk-on role in the 1933 film Emperor Jones. She played maids in Rebel Without a Cause, Father's Little Dividend, and The Bad and the Beautiful. She appeared in five Broadway plays between 1930 and 1940. She gave up acting at age 51 and returned to Hartford to be close to her ailing father. She took a nursing job at Terry Steam Turbine Corp. in Hartford and retired in 1971. She also served as a justice of the peace. She was an active member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, one of the first directors of the Hartford Urban League, and a member of the Charter Revision Committee of Hartford. She ran for a seat on the Hartford City Council as a Republican, but did not win. Her house on Mahl Avenue in the Clay-Arsenal neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places.
