Ella Brown (1918-1984) 

CT's first Black policewoman, founder of travel agency, leader in senior services

Brown began her 26-year career in law enforcement in 1943, when she joined the Hartford Police Department, becoming Connecticut’s first black policewoman. Assigned to the Juvenile Division, Brown had responsibility for investigation of crimes involving women and children as either victims or offenders. She also worked with the Vice and Liquor Squad, the Patrol Division, and with detectives on investigations involving women. Her duties emphasized preventative and protective work with women and children. While still a police officer, she embarked on a second career as co-founder of the World Travel Service in 1963. In 1977, she started a third career working for the North Hartford Senior Center, eventually becoming its executive director, a position she held until her death in 1984.
