Darrell S. Garner (1935-2013) 

Housing and Tenants Rights Advocate

Garner came to Hartford in 1957, found a job his first day here, and went on to work for the Betty Knox Foundation and start the Stowe Village Boys Club in a space donated by the Hartford Housing Authority. He flirted with running to represent Hartford's 4th district, but withdrew. He went to work as the Director of Housing and GED programs at the Community Renewal Team and was named resident manager and administrator of the South Arsenal Neighborhood Development Housing. In 1976, one of his Trinity College interns was future Hartford mayor, Eddie Perez. They, and others, started ONE/CHANE to unite North Hartford. Garner co-hosted a radio show "What's On Your Mind." In the 1980s he as co-founder of a construction company, and then retired to the city's West End, where he joined the neighborhood civic association and became President of the Shepherd Park Tenants Association. He started the West End Community Center in 2002 and pushed to establish a park in the neighborhood, off Sisson Avenue. Gardner grew up in a small rural mining town outside of Pittsburgh, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and became involved in the Civil Rights movement in New York City in the 1950s.
