Laura Wheeler Waring (1887-1948)

Portrait Painter, Art Educator

One of the prominent artists of the Harlem renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, Waring was born in Hartford and graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1906. Waring’s expressive portraits are her most famous work which was included in the first all-black exhibition in America, held in 1928 by the Harmon Foundation. In addition to pursuing her own art, she devoted half her life to making artistic instruction available to black students.

A year before she was born, her father, Rev. Robert F. Wheeler, was named lead pastor of the Talcott Street Congregational Church, Hartford's first Black congregational church, where he helped grow the church's membership so that in 1906 they had to build a two story building in its location on Talcott and Market streets.
