Warner Lawson (1903-1971) 

Musician, University Music Department Administrator

Lawson was born in Hartford, attended Hartford Public High School and Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn., on a Julliard scholarship, and returned to Connecticut to receive his B.A. in music from Yale in 1929. He studied with Artur Schnable, the noted classical pianist who fled Berlin when the Nazi Party took control. Lawson's father, Raymond Augustus Lawson, was a pianist and teacher and his mother was a soprano soloist with the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Warner returned to Fisk for four years and became head of the music department. In 1936 he directed the music department at A&T College in Greensboro, NC. In 1942 he became Dean of the School of Music at Howard University.
