Rachel Taylor Milton (1901-1995) 

First Black Woman Graduate of Hartford Seminary's School of Religious Education
Civic Leader, Founder of the Urban League

Taylor Milton was a co-founder of the Urban League of Greater Hartford in 1964. She was the first black woman to graduate from the Hartford Seminary’s School of Religious Education. A pioneer for civil rights, she served as executive director of the YWCAs in Pittsburgh, Omaha, Chicago and Nashville. She inaugurated the first interracial YWCA camps in Pittsburgh and in Omaha, where she was president of the city’s Interracial Senior Citizens Council. She was the Associate Dean of Women at Fisk University in Nashville. She returned to Connecticut in 1959 and worked for the State Bureau for Vocational Rehabilitation, which lead her to help create the Urban League. She was honored by the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame in 1994. She was a sister of Martha Taylor Shaw and aunt to Spencer Shaw.
