Weaver-Bey was a developer of affordable houses, community leader and owner of a radio station. He was promoted in 1970 to run a division of Greater Hartford Realty Management Corp. and eventually took over the firm and directed it toward affordable housing. He started the Greater Hartford Initiative, awarding scholarships to students. Oprah Winfrey donated $100,000 to the program in 1997. He was the first African American president of The Hartford Club, a private club that started in 1873 and counted Mark Twain as a member. He was a member of the state board that managed Hartford’s city schools in the 1990s. Weaver-Bey was the youngest boy in a family of eight children, graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1962, worked at a Union Meat Co., and went to the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. He started at WKND-AM radio selling ads and later owned the station.
